Copyright Policy

The governing collection-management document for ECNHS includes a Copyright clause. Under that clause, staff and volunteers “will acquire and/or create permissions on any archive, artifact, or reproduction, as required to enable use for exhibition, internet postings, or use otherwise.”  That means for items in our collection (artifacts, archival materials, reproductions), ECNHS holds or seeks the appropriate usage rights before they display or publish them — including online or in exhibitions. As such, any reuse, publication, or redistribution of archival materials from ECNHS likely requires permission from them (or license) under the terms that we control.

What to do — when you want to reuse or publish material

If you plan to reuse or publish images, documents, or archival material from ECNHS (or photos taken on-site), here’s what we recommend:

  • Contact ECNHS directly — the curator (“Kathy Fisher, Curator, ECNHS”) — via the email - old.stone.house@cityssm.on.ca or phone 705-759-5443 to request permission. This is especially important for archival materials or reproductions.
  • If you’re using a publicly shared photo (on Wikimedia, Flickr, etc.) check the licensing associated with that specific image. If it’s CC-BY/CC-BY-SA or similar, you can reuse under the license’s terms (attribution, share-alike, etc.).
  • For commercial use (e.g. publication, marketing, merchandising) you should get explicit written permission — particularly for images or content that belong to ECNHS / the City.
  • When using any content (text, images) in academic or educational contexts, still properly credit: mention ECNHS (and, if relevant, the original photographer/uploader) and, ideally, link back to source.
