Our Commitment to Preservation
At the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site, we are committed to preserving not only the physical history of our region but also ensuring its long-term accessibility through digitization.
Our ongoing artifact digitization project involves carefully photographing, cataloguing, and digitally archiving items from our collection — including tools, textiles, documents, household items, and personal belongings that reflect daily life in Sault Ste. Marie during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Why Digitize?
Preservation
Digital records reduce the need to handle fragile artifacts, helping to prolong their physical condition.
Accessibility
Digitized collections make it easier for researchers, students, and the public to explore history without geographic or physical barriers.
Education & Engagement
Digital archives enhance our interpretive programs, virtual exhibits, and online storytelling.
Disaster Preparedness
Having high-quality digital copies protects our heritage in case of damage or loss.
What's Included
Each digitized artifact is documented with:
- High-resolution images
- A detailed description and historical context
- Accession information and condition notes
- Keywords for searchability in future public-facing databases
Looking Ahead
As part of our commitment to innovation in heritage preservation, we aim to make portions of our digital collection publicly accessible in the future — allowing anyone, anywhere, to connect with the rich history of the Ermatinger Clergue site.
Whether you're a researcher, educator, or curious visitor, digitization ensures that the stories behind these artifacts continue to inspire generations to come.
